An oil painting on board of a battle scene by listed German artist Christian Sell II (1856-1925), depicting a scene from what is likely the Franco-Prussian War. This high action scene features a lance-wielding Uhlan soldier on horseback charging a French Infantryman on the ground, with some other soldiers on horseback following behind through the dust. The painting is signed ‘Chr. Sell’ to the lower right. It is presented in a gold-tone wood frame. A handwritten inscription in German is present to the verso, providing information about the work.
Condition
- small crack in upper central area of painted surface; small spots of accretion scattered throughout; some wear in frame includes stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
