An acrylic painting titled Poe On Canvas 1 by contemporary Maryland-base artist Steven Wakefield. This painting has layered stenciled embellishments which depict portraits of Edgar Allan Poe in red monotone atop an expressively rendered background and with blue paint overtop the stenciled images. This piece is signed ’S. Wakefield ’ to the lower left corner of the picture plane. It is presented unframed.

Stephen Wakefield has been collecting found objects, primarily of metal and wood, his entire life. The self-taught artist began his professional artist’s journey when he was inspired by the metal collections housed at the Walters Art Museum in his native Baltimore. He was inspired to experiment with his vast inventory of finds gathered from Baltimore’s defunct historical buildings. Tin ceilings, commercial gears, chains, unique and ordinary metals along with wood of all sorts are transformed by Wakefield with stains, finishes, and patinas to create juxtapositions of color and form.
