Pair of American School Portraits of John and Elizabeth Myers

Item Details

Artist Unknown, American School
John Myers and Elizabeth Myers, ca. 1870s
Graphite Drawings on Paper
John Myers Signed ‘Clifford’ to Lower Left

A pair of American school graphite portraits on paper, created ca. 1870s. They depict John and Elizabeth Myers, with plaques indicating life dates. The works likely are derived from photographic images, presumably daguerreotypes or ambrotypes, given the prototypical manner of representation. Gentleman is signed ‘Clifford’. A possible attribution would be an R.A. Clifford (American, 1833-1895), an itinerant portrait painter who is recorded as having a ‘Photographic and Fine Art Gallery’ in Wisconsin in the 1860s and later.
