Antique French Hand-Colored Map of Africa after Petrus Bertius

Item Details

An antique French hand-colored map of Africa after Petrus Bertius (Flemish, 1565-1629), probably 17th century. This map is very likely a 17th century pirated copy after the original map by Bertius published by Melchior Tavernier (Dutch/French, 1594-1665) in 1627. Map piracy was widespread in 17th century Europe, particularly prevalent in Amsterdam, thanks to weak copyright laws and the insatiable demand for new cartography thanks to the Age of Exploration. It was not until the 18th century when more robust copyright laws suprressed the practice. The map is engraved on laid paper, displaying the topography of the African continent and its surrounding oceans. In addition to mountains and rivers, the landmass is marked with a variety of animals including elephants, lions, and camels while masted ships with French flags sail on the waters amidst sea monsters. The cartouche reads ‘Carte de / L’ Afrique / Corrigée et augmentée / dessus toutes les autres / cy devant faites L’ année / AD 1640’. It is matted and housed in a later, giltwood frame behind plexiglass. There is a string on the back for hanging.
