Hand-Knotted Persian Tabriz Area Rug
Item Details
A finely hand-knotted Persian area rug. This lustrous wool rug, attributed to weavers from Tabriz, features a vase design over a cream field with dusty-pink spandrels. Rendered in a palette of deep midnight blue/black, cream, dusty rose, cerulean, olive and carnelian, it begins with a round floral medallion, grounded in midnight blue and seeded with a star at the center. The medallion is surrounded by crisply rendered palmettes, flowers, leaves and whirling vines, elements that continue in the spandrels amid vase forms. Framing the field are eight borders, including a wide herati main border featuring pastel flowers and palmettes over midnight blue. Selvedges are overcast, with protective strips sewn along the underside to prevent shrinkage. Ends finish with long fine wool warp fringe. A label on the underside has faded and is only partly legible.
