A 1770 set of books on the history of the reign of Charles the Fifth, Emperor of Germany. The full title is The History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth, Emperor of Germany; And of all the Kingdoms and States in Europe, during his Age. To which is prefixed, a View of the Progress of Society in Europe, From the Subversion of the Roman Empire, to the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century. The set of three books are half bound leather volumes with marbled paper on board covers. The history was written by William Roberston, D.D., principal of the university of Edinburgh and Historiographer to His Majesty for Scotland. The set was printed in America for subscribers, of which John Adams is one, and a list of over 100 other prominent eighteenth century Americans is included in volume III. The books are personalized and dated with hand-written inscriptions on the fly pages.
