South American Arpillera Tapestry "Paraiso"

A South American arpillera tapestry piece titled Paraiso (paradise). Arpillera are patchwork applique and embroidered textiles originating in Chile, but contemporary arpillera are also made in Peru and Columbia as a mean of income. This piece depicts the garden of Eden, with Adam and Eve being tempted by the serpent to take fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, surrounded by animals of all kinds in a lush landscape with angels overhead. Three dimensional, stuffed figures are affixed to the work, constructed using patchwork and appliqué embroidery. The title is stitched in the sky to the upper center, and the piece has a crocheted border. It is unsigned and mounted on a off-white backing, behind glass, in a black frame with wire to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- slight scuffs to frame; discoloration to background mount along lower edge.
