George Taylor War-Date Document Signed December 21, 1775

Item Details

An exceedingly rare war-date document signed by Pennsylvania Statesman, Ironmaster, and United States Declaration of Independence signer George Taylor (c. 1716–1781). The document reads ‘To the Honorable the Committee of Safety of Province of Pennsylvania – The Petition of Andrew Kachlein of Easton in the County of Northampton / Showeth, That your Petitioner is desirous of entering into the Service in the Continental Army and prays to be appointed first Lieutenant in one of the Battalions now to be raised. / Andrew Kachleine / We the Subscribers recommend the Petitioner as Sober Active Spirited man of good Character and considerable property and we think him fit to be a first Lieutenant in a Company. Easton December 21st 1775. / Geo. Taylor / Henry Looker / Christopher Wagner / John Wetzel’. The document is presented under a black mat, under glass, in a black frame featuring subtle gold trim. A wire hanger is affixed to the verso. Easton, December 21, 1775. DS 1 page, folio. The document is accompanied by typed transcript and a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.

George Taylor remains among the most sought-after signatures of Declaration of Independence signers. This Continental Army petition bears several counter-signatures and is of special interest to the American Revolution period of Pennsylvania history. It is likely that the document was introduced as a petition for Johann Andreas (Andrew) Kachlein (1728–1781). Kachlein was commissioned in January of 1776 as First Lieutenant in Captain Thomas Craig’s Company, Second Pennsylvania Battalion.
