1870s Leatherbound "Picciola" with 1883 School Prize Bookplate and Gilt Seal

A circa 1870s edition of the novel Picciola, written by Joseph-Xavier Boniface under the pen name X.-B. Saintine. The book is bound in full leather with raised bands, gilt spine decoration, gilt-edged boards, tooled turn-ins, marbled endpapers and marbled page edges. This copy of the French-language novel bears a bookplate in English identifying the book as a ‘Prize for French’ awarded to a pupil of Norfolk County School in 1883; a school seal is stamped in gilt on the front cover, with the school name ‘Comitatus Norfolciensis Schola’ and the motto ‘Culture Shameth No Field Nor Folk’.
