Antique Elizabethan Carved Oak Box, Late 16th Century

An antique Elizabethan carved oak box, late 16th century. The box features a rectangular lid with coggled, lateral edges opening to a vacant interior via wrought iron hinges with rose head nails. The exterior, front panel is inscribed ‘1584’ with a central lock and a carved arcade.
Among book collectors, this is known as a Bible box, although it could have been used to store other valuable documents, deeds, and keepsakes.
Provenance: Previously sold at Christie’s London, lot 510, on November 30, 2010.

Condition
- scattered surface/finish wear, shrinkage cracks, and chips; lid with some losses to front lip; base with a slightly larger chip to front, right corner; sides of lid probably had strips of drop molding at one time, which are now missing; lid missing latch to lock; interior with some later reinforcements to lid and to corners.
