Stephen Hopkins Document Signed Regarding Appointment of Henry Marchant

A partly printed document signed by Governor Stephen Hopkins announcing Henry Marchant’s appointment to the position of Justice of The Peace for the town of Newport. Henry Marchant was a lawyer from Newport, Rhode Island, delegate to the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1779, signer of the Articles of Confederation for Rhode Island, and United States federal judge appointed by George Washington. Stephen Hopkins was a politician serving as member and speaker of the Rhode Island general assembly, four term governor, Chief Justice of Rhode Island Supreme Court, member of the First Continental Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The document bears countersignature of Henry Ward as secretary. Rhode Island, July 6, 1767. DS 1 page, oblong legal folio. The piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.
