John Penn War-Date Document Signed as Delegate From North Carolina

An exceedingly rare war-date document signed (extra handwriting penned in the hand of the signee) by John Penn (1741–1788) as Delegate from North Carolina, countersigned by Thomas Burke and Allen Jones. The document suggests for the purchase of arms from Carter Braxton of Virginia ‘if there shall appear any danger of actual invasion of our Country’ on the account of the state of North Carolina. The document is signed by three members of the North Carolina Continental Congress – John Penn, Thomas Burke, and Allen Jones. Carter Braxton was a Virginia merchant, planter, and politician who signed the Declaration of Independence but remained moderate during the war. This document is presented behind a black mat, behind glass, in a black and gold frame wired for hanging. Philadelphia, January 22, 1780. 1 page. The piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.
