Matthew Thornton Document Signed Concerning Lawsuit
Item Details
A document signed (extra handwriting penned in the hand of the signee) by American Revolutionary Patriot Matthew Thornton. This document was signed and inscribed by New Hampshire doctor and representative Matthew Thornton (1713-1803), who would later signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This legal document details a lawsuit brought in pursuit of an owed eight pounds, between two contestants known only within its text as ‘Plaintiff’ and ‘Defendant’; the letter is signed by Thornton ‘for plaintiff’ to the bottom. It is presented in a black mat, under glass in a black wooden frame with a gold-toned border, and a wire hanger to the verso. No date (ca. 1772). 1 page, 4to. The piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.
