Arthur Middleton Document Signed as Member of Continental Congress

A exceedingly rare war-date document signed (all extra handwriting penned in the hand of the signee) by American Revolutionary Patriot Arthur Middleton as Member of Continental Congress to Philadelphia merchant John Rose. Arthur Middleton (1742-1787) was a radical Patriot and lawyer from South Carolina, serving in the Second Continental Congress and signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776 before being captured by the British an imprisoned in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1780. After being released the following year, he, along with four other signatories, signed this document of December 29, 1781, authorizing payment from South Carolina to Alexander Moultrie. The document is presented in a black mat with a typewritten explanatory note, under glass in a black wooden frame with a gold-toned border and a wire hanger to the verso. Philadelphia, December 29, 1781. 1 page, oblong 8vo. The piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication.
