An oil painting on canvas board titled The Pond by listed American Western artist John Encinias (b. 1949). Rendered with loose brushstrokes, dashes of pigment, and suppressed detail, this work features an impressionistic landscape with a pond in the foreground surrounded by a grassy bank and trees densely packed throughout the background. The painting is signed to the lower left. The work is inscribed to the verso providing the artist, title, medium, and dimensions. A receipt from Crestmoor Gallery is also attached to the verso. The composition is presented in a gold-tone gesso wood frame with a blue-painted liner, and a canvas sight edge.
Primarily based in Colorado and New Mexico, self-taught artist John Encinias is known for his plein air paintings of American Western landscapes. He describes his work as ‘impressionistic realism’ as he attempts to capture the fugitive effects of light in a given scene. His work has been exhibited in numerous institutions including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, the Albuquerque Museum, and Seattle’s Frye Art Museum, among others.
