Early 19th Century Pennsylvania Cross-Stitch Samplers

Stiched

A pair of antique Pennsylvania Dutch cross-stitch samplers. Both feature samples of the alphabet and numbers in various fonts in neutral, blue, and green threads. The first piece also features geometric and floral line breaks with a devotional quotation and stitched signature by ‘Maria Strutfield marked in the year of her age 12’. The second is finished with a branched floral border and marked ‘Julia McMahon Aged 15 Jan 10 1830’. Both are presented behind glass in wooden frames with wire to the versos for hanging.

Condition

- to Fair; discoloration throughout both items; missing stitches to numbers at lower edge of one item; bleeding dyes on black thread of one item; a few loose threads to both items; minor nicks and wear to frames.
