Antique Chinese Late Qing or Early Republic Carved Hardwood Hall Table

Item Details

An antique Chinese late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) or early Republic period (1912-1949) carved hardwood hall table. The dark-stained frame features a rectangular, paneled top above a molded, squared-off apron carved with stylized bats and flower pots. Additionally, there are auspicious characters representing longevity, happiness, and double happiness, which continue onto the tops of the four square legs. The legs are joined by lateral stretchers with curved, interior moldings and the underside retains two calligraphic, Chinese inscriptions. The upper inscription appears to read ‘亲可八顺四方’ meaning ‘you can get everything going smoothly for you no matter where you go’ while the lower ‘黃丫勿地福寿’ translates to ‘a young woman can not tell the future or long life’. Based on the auspicious characters and the idiomatic inscriptions, it seems logical that this table was originally presented as a wedding gift.

Condition

- top with some small/light stains; one short end of top has a filled, edge loss and a couple of resulting cracks; other short end of top with a tiny edge chip to corner and a small, repaired break to lower, apron molding; apron with a couple light/minor cracks near corners, both of which have been overpainted with a black stain in an attempt to cover; top of one leg with a light/filled crack and another small fill repair; table is sturdy with scattered joint gaps; other scratches and surface wear as would be expected with age and use.
