"Empress Jingū" Japanese Woodblock Print

A Japanese woodblock print titled Empress Jingū (神功皇后). This black and white piece features Empress Jingū, traditionally considered to have reigned in 201-269. According to the classic work Nihon Shoki, she led an army to invade the ‘promised land’, and as such, she is often depicted wearing battle armor, as she is here. Accompanying the portrait is an description of the empress. The lower left of the piece is marked ‘Craftsman Gyokuzan Genjirō’ (人彫細工人玉山源二郎). It is presented under a mat with protective acetate and a label to the verso.

- to fair; discoloration and foxing to paper; light wear to edges and corners; wrinkling to plastic; vertical crease to center of paper.
