This typewriter has a three-row QWERTY keyboard and an open turret design with interchangeable type shuttles; the Multiplex accommodates two type shuttles at once and is designed to switch readily between them, essentially doubling the number of characters available and allowing the typist to produce special characters such as Greek letters or variant fonts such as italics. The typewriter is mounted to a wooden base with a ‘Hammond Typewriter’ logo medallion, includes a latching wooden cover with an instruction sheet on the underside, and is marked with the serial number 158042.
