A hand-knotted Afghan wool area rug. The finely woven rug has been rendered in shades of scarlet, persimmon, rosewood, midnight, and ivory. The scarlet field is infilled with a series of hexagonal devices and hooked diamond guls. Paired narrow bands of small floral motifs create a lattice frame. The wide compound border is comprised of checked, diamond, quatre-foil, and floral bands flanking a band of diamond devices. Each end features wide bands of lattice designs as well as knotted fringe. The selvedges are overcast and the rug is not marked.
