Brass Réaumur Scale Wall Thermometer

Item Details

A brass Réaumur scale wall thermometer. This thermometer features a dark wooden wall mount with a brass plate reading ‘Thermometer nach Réaumur’ (‘Thermometer after Réaumur’) to the top in script lettering. The thermometer prominently shows the Réaumur scale, developed by French entomologist René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur and used in parts of Europe into the early 20th century; parallel listings of Fahrenheit and Celsius grades are also shown along the capillary. The bulb is ensconced within a brass cage, and the word ‘Siolper’ (possibly the maker) is marked at the bottom. The base includes a simple hanger to the verso.

Condition

- tarnish to brass; some wear to wooden base; bits of mercury stuck in the upper sections of the thermometer; accuracy not tested.
