A graphite drawing on paper titled St. Andrews Blockhouse by listed artist Edna Lawrence (Rhode Island, 1898 – 1987). The work depicts the wooden fort built to protect Canadian civilians during the War of 1812. It is signed and titled by the artist to the lower left and right corners. To the verso is a descriptive label, a biographical label, and a gallery stamp. This painting is housed between two layers of white matting.
Lawrence was an educator and painter, most well-known for her natural history specimens. The artist received her formal training from the Rhode Island School of Design (RSID). Later, she secured a career teaching art at the RSID for over 50 years. The artist fostered a deep love for the natural world and curated a teaching collection of over 25,000 specimens. An admired regional artist, she was listed in Who’s Who in American Art and her works can be found in private collections and public collections including the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab at RSID, the Providence Art Club, and more.
