A mixed media sculpture on board titled Medal of Dishonor by Frank Kowing (1944-2016), created in 2009. The sculpture is comprised of a flat black surface bearing a chalk inscription surrounded by zigzagging edges. Affixed to the lower area, a hanging charcoal portrait of a man overlapped by multiple branches painted in a vibrant orange. An informational label is attached including artist’s signature in graphite, title, date and dimensions of the piece. Wire affixed to the verso for hanging. Accompanied with a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.

- minor wear, minor paint loss and dust residues throughout the sculpture; white chalk inscription has slightly faded.
