A mixed media sculpture titled Meaner Than a Junkyard Dog: Oscar and Oscar Jr. by listed artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944 – 2016), created 2007. Comprised of wood, silk ties, a graphite drawing, and more. Titled and dated on an artist’s label attached with twine and a plastic bag. Accompanied by a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
