A Ticuna style balsa wood and palm bark mask from Brazil. This piece features a rectangular face with simplified features and geometric designs mounted on a woven ‘hood’. The mask is presented on a metal stand and rectangular wood base. An attached tag reads ‘Tribe: Ticunas, Brazil and Colombia Amazon Jungle / Mask used by the male guests at the ’Pelazon’ ceremony honoring a girl that becomes [sic] of age at 13 years old. This mask is made of Balsa wood and Palm bark decorated with vegetable dyes.’
Condition
- to fair; holes and discoloration to woven material; scuffs at top of mask and along cheeks; chips along edges of base.
