Richard Red Skelton was born in Vincennes, Indiana on July 18, 1913. As a teenager Skelton worked in a circus and became an entertainer in Vaudeville. In the 1930s he broadcasted his own radio show and became one of the most popular movie comedians. Skelton also became an avid painter, using his free time to create works of art that revolved around clowns.

Condition

- wear to edges of frame; dust and accretions present to frame and surface of painting; mark to right side of ribbon on top hat; stretcher marks visible to upper margin of painting; staining to left arm of clown (right side of painting).
