Vintage Hand-Painted Brayton Laguna Ceramic Blackamoor Tazza
Item Details
An unusual Brayton Laguna Blackamoor tazza. The large figural centerpiece features three figures at the center, supporting the stem and open reservoir over their heads. The centerpiece is hand-painted in green, brown and blue with gold lustre detailing, finished in a high gloss glaze. It is stamp marked ‘Brayton Laguna’ to the underside.
Brayton Laguna (1927-1968) was the first successfully established pottery in Laguna Beach, California, founded by Durlin Brayton (American, 1897-1951) in 1927. Between 1936 and the later 1940s, he and his wife expanded their home studio into a large commercial enterprise, popularizing brightly colored tableware such as that produced by Bauer and Pacific Clay and emulated by Homer Laughlin in his Fiesta line. The company was the first ceramics operation to be licensed by the Walt Disney Company to produce character merchandise, and prospered until the late 1960s, at which time a flood of imports forced the company to close.
