1860 French Oil Painting in the Romantic Style

A signed 1860 oil painting on canvas in the manner of French painter Jacques Auguste Regnier (1787-1860). This large painting of a twilight scene at a wooded Gothic chapel utilizes the dramatic lighting and dynamically divided composition structure indicative to the style of the late Romantic era. The tension of the dramatic scene is echoed in the emotive expressions of the figures depicted. A signature in the lower right appears to read ‘Regnier’, and dates the work to 1860. The painting is presented ready to hang in a gilt wood and gesso frame with ornately molded foliate corners with a floral motif.
Condition
- craquelure throughout; has been cleaned but not relined; varnish has slightly yellow patina; light inpainting around foliage and bushes, but majority of paint is original; two small nickel sized holes in canvas.
