An oil painting on canvas by well-listed artist Hayley Lever (1876 – 1958), titled Racing Sailboats at Marblehead. Typical of Lever’s work, this Post-Impressionist work depicts sailboats next to a Massachusetts harbor town. The piece is signed to the lower right and presented in a brushed wood frame. Artist, title, and date are inscribe to the stretcher.
Hayley Lever was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1876 and showed an early interest in art. He would then move to England in 1893 for formal training and eventually to London where he studied in an artist colony. During his time at the art colony the artist would begin to create his seascapes and landscapes he is known for. In 1911 Lever moved to New York where he would gain a following and eventually teach at the Art Students League in 1931. Lever’s works can be found in major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and The New Britain Museum of Art to name a few.
