An oil painting on canvas by well-listed artist Lemuel Eldred (American; 1848 – 1921), titled Caravan Through the Desert. The work depicts a group of people traveling across the desert by camel back. The work is signed to the lower right and presented in a gilt Neo Classical style frame.

Born in 1848, Lemuel Eldred was a self-taught artist known for his realistic paintings of marine life, beaches, harbors, and cliffs. Though generally known for his oil paintings, Eldred worked in watercolor, colored pencils, and etching. His work is represented in the Peabody Museum of Salem, MA, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, and the Kendall Whaling Museum

- wear to edges of frame; loss of gesso to lower left and lower right corners of frame; dust and accretions present to frame and painting surface; staining to insert of frame; toning to canvas verso; foxing to canvas verso.
