A 19th century oil painting on canvas by Messina Coulson. This oil painting depicts a vibrant and idealized rural landscape. It features a rustic watermill and a dirt path walking down traversing the landscape as well as a small cabin and a figure working the well beside it. This piece appears to be unsigned. It is labeled on the back of the canvas ‘Designed by Sarah L. Coulson and painted by her daughter Messina, 1892’. This piece is presented in an open wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.

Condition

- holes to canvas at left edge and throughout upper right corner; abrasions throughout painting particularly to lower right with paint loss; discoloration to upper center of painting and canvas from repairs verso; over painting to upper center of sky; tear to canvas at left with some repair to verso; chips to molding of frame along lower and upper edges; cracks to molding of frame; abrasions and wear to finish of frame with some paint loss; general wear and nicks throughout frame; several areas of patch repairs to verso of canvas.
