Pieced "Underground Railroad" Sampler Quilt Signed and Dedicated by the Maker

A handcrafted Underground Railroad sampler style quilt. Each block, pieced in a different pattern, represents the story of the Underground Railroad. The blocks are constructed from different calico fabrics and assembled using sashes. The border uses a floral stripe fabric and the binding is calico. The backing is made of large blocks of different fabrics. The quilt has been quilted using a sewing machine. A legend explaining the meaning of the blocks has been sewn into the backing of the quilt. Also incorporated into the back are two printed copies of documents relating to William A. Kahler, born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and who served for three years in the Union Army in an Ohio infantry regiment. The maker, Barbara Ann Reid Erickson, has also sewn and embroidered a dedication on the backing:
This Quilt was made to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, April 1861. It is made to honor your maternal Great Great Grandfather, William Henry Kahler, Co. A ,104th Ohio Infantry, and his brother Jones, Co. A, 104th Ohio Infantry and brother Benjamin, Co. A, 191st Ohio infantry and Co. B, 1st Indiana Cavalry Volunteers.
