A Japanese ink and watercolor painting on paper of a Noh performer in the play Dōjōji (道成寺). This painting depicts a person adorned in flowing robes, clutching at a hand fan while circling a foliate motif bell. They appear to be wearing a stark white mask with a jovial smile seen to the exterior. To the lower left corner of the composition is a set of painted calligraphic characters and an artist seal. The painting is presented under glass in a green wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso. The subject is written on an upper left label.
Condition
- discoloration from tape to upper left corner; some bleeding to ink throughout; scratches to frame particularly right inner edge; crack through veneer of frame to left center; some dust accretions to frame.
