Erté Serigraph Print "Columbine"

A serigraph on paper by well-listed artist Romain “Erté” de Tirtoff (1892-1990). This work was printed by Chromacomp, New York; published by Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts, Ltd. Depicted is a woman beneath an arc of flowers against a black background. It is pencil signed, “Erte” to the lower right, and numbered 164/300 to the lower left. This piece is mounted behing acrylic glass in a pastel mat and silver tone metal frame. Hanging hardware is present to the veros.

Roman De Tirtoff, known by the pseudonym Erté, is a Russian-born French designer who flourished in many fields including set design, fashion, and the graphic arts, spanning most of the 20th century. He began working for Harper’s Bazaar in 1915 creating over 240 covers for the magazine for over 22 years. His fashion illustrations appeared in numerous other publications. During 1976 Erté was awarded the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris by the French government. His work is housed in private and permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum to name a few.

Condition

- to fair; buckling along top of ground; toning around margins on ground; debris beneath acrylic covering; tears are present in the paper to the right of the composition; foxing on mat board; plastic coating chipped off of frame at bottom center; gaps in frame at top and bottom left corners; punctures and tears in backing paper on verso of frame.
