Large Semi-Antique Persian Hunting Rug

A large semi-antique Persian hunting rug. This gorgeous wool area rug is finely hand-knotted in a jewel-tone palette of midnight blue, ruby, cornsilk, powder blue, blush, and citrine with prominent celadon, emerald, and violet highlights. It begins with a central medallion over a contoured, midnight blue field, the medallion populated with palmettes and other florals; bracketing the medallion are four cartouches, each featuring an image of a lion attacking a deer. The field is populated with deer, leopards, doves, and colorful peacocks amid trees of life, thickets of flowers, and foliage. Spandrels include vases, deer, and lotus blooms over cream. Framing the field are eight borders, including a wide, ruby main border filled with crisply rendered flowering trees and bouquets. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with ivory wool warp fringe. A faded fabric label is attached to the underside.
