An early to mid 20th-century restrike ukiyo-e woodblock print on paper titled ‘Hinamatsuri’ Doll Festival after Japanese artist Isoda Koryūsai (礒田 湖龍斎, 1735 – 1790) from his series Twelve Elegant Festivals (風流十二節 雛祭). The piece depicts a couple in patterned robes preparing for the March Hinamatsuri (雛祭り) doll festival. They are depicted gesturing to a small emperor doll that sits on top of a pink interior shelf. The print includes a block of calligraphy printed in plate to the center right and is stamped ‘Made in Japan’ to the verso. It is presented unframed.
Condition
- moderate discoloration to image, with several small stains; wear to corners and edges of paper with tears along left and top edges; print is unframed.
