A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic double handled urn, Budapest, Hungary. Ornate acanthus scroll motif in high relief from the handles to the pedestal base with lustrous gilt decoration and pale paint decoration. To either side of the body are patches of raised reticulation. Marked to the underside with a black stamp.
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
