Late 19th-Century Emil Fischer Reticulated Ceramic Ewer

A 19th-century Emil Fischer (Fischer J. Budapest) ceramic ewer, Budapest, Hungary. Emil took over for his father, Ignace, in the later years using his own branded mark. Hand painted polychrome decoration with gilt accents and two panels to either side with painted scenes of children playing. The body is a highly reticulated with square forms with a shell form spout and footed base. Marked to the underside with a black stamp and impressed ‘FISCHER EMIL BUDAPEST.’
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
