Item Details

Robert Herrmann (American; 1922-1996)
Still Life with Lamp, 1955
Oil Painting on Canvas
Signed, Titled, and Dated to Verso
24’ W x 30’ H

An oil painting on canvas titled Still Life with Lamp by Cincinnati artist Robert Herrmann (American, 1922-1996), executed in 1955. This work features a truncated view of an interior scene with a student lamp, some books, and a briefcase set on a table. A window with a floral patterned curtain to the left opens up to a view of a building next-door. A unique work for the artist, the composition juxtaposes organic sinuous shapes with Herrmann’s signature flat architectural panels and geometric shapes. The composition is signed, titled, and dated to the verso. It remains unframed. Included in the lot are two exhibition catalogs from Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC., copyrighted 2004 and 2008.

Robert Herrmann acquired his formal artistic and architectural training at the University of Cincinnati, University of Wisconsin, Ohio State University, University of Iowa, and Columbia University. While professionally trained, he chose to never exhibit his work publicly, making his first solo exhibit posthumous. He is known for his precisionist style and his paintings of architectural landscapes.
