Exceptional Antique Signed Hand-Knotted Dorokhsh Mashhad Palace Rug

Item Details

An exceptional antique hand-knotted Dorokhsh Mashhad palace rug. This inscribed Persian wool rug features an elaborate floral design beginning with an oval nested medallion over a sky blue and ivory field with contoured spandrels. Populating the field are a variety of roses, peonies and other flower forms, palmettes and vines in monochrome colors within each design element, while some are multicolored for depth and contrast. Included are depictions of songbirds inside boteh, cranes and swans tucked into medallions along the edges of the field. The palette begins with multiple shades of light blue, widening to include cream, ivory, midnight blue, ochre, mauve, blush, crimson, rose, apricot and teal. Framing the field are multiple floral borders, including a wide main border featuring three stacked floral designs in mihrab forms with varying ground colors. It has elaborate compound guard borders in indigo, tangerine, scarlet, shades of green and teal, framed by a scrolled medallion border breaking into an ivory band of lobed flower heads. An inscription is included in a cartouche at each end of the rug; according to the seller of this rug, inscriptions include the date 1280, which translates approximately to 1864 AD. Selvedges are overcast, and the ends finish with dense cotton warp fringe.
