2002 Kristin Nelson Artist Proof Print

Item Details

A 2002 artist proof engraving with aquatint print on paper by artist Kristin Nelson (born 1945). This print depicts a horizontal gathering of women dressed in formal, colored dresses, holding up a banner reading ‘Remember the Ladies’. They are rendered with pooled, textural pigment. To the margins is a dated signature and print edition. The print is presented under protective glazing beneath matting featuring a gold tone fillet, which is placed in a natural wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.

Kristin Nelson is an American Primitive painter, actor, and author. Nelson started painting at the age of seventeen, after President Kennedy’s assassination moved her to express her feelings on canvas with the painting “When the Kennedys were in the White House”. Her painting career took a back seat to her acting career when, after her 1963 marriage to actor and musician Ricky Nelson, she joined the cast of the family television show The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet. Nelson rekindled her passion for painting in the late 1980’s, and it continues to be her main focus to this day. Her brightly colored Folk art paintings are conceived without perspective, often depicting many figures, and have been likened to works by Primitive artist Grandma Moses. Nelson came into national prominence when a painting of the White House was purchased by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. A full size coffee table book of Nelson’s paintings titled Out Of My Mind was published in 1999.
