José Dovis was originally from Coazze, a small village near the Italian Alps and was trained in pottery and painting. After leaving Italy, he studied in Argentina, Mexico and Washington, DC where he studied at The Corcoran School of Art which is now part of George Washington University.

In 1978, Dovis set up a studio in his home on the East coast of Virginia and began traveling, selling his original pottery at shows and fairs. His designs blend classic Italian majolica with early New England stoneware styles, having designs that are informed by New England countryside and the Tidewater region.
