Large Hand-Knotted Persian Kashan Area Rug

A large Persian Kashan area rug. This short-pile wool rug is hand knotted in a palette of ruby, midnight blue, ivory and azure. It begins with a large ogival medallion in layers of cerulean, ivory, and ruby, filled with curvilinear palmettes, leaves, flowers and vines, elements that continue in the field, spandrels and borders. The medallion rests on a contoured field of midnight blue, cornered in layers of ruby, ivory and cerulean. Framing the field are eight borders, including an ornate herati main border grounded in ruby and featuring lotus shapes amid meandering palmettes. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with short cotton warp fringe. A label attached to the reverse is written in Arabic lettering.
