Henry York Folk Art Sculpture of Nude Male Figure

Item Details

A Folk Art sculpture of a nude male figure by Kentucky artist Henry York (1913-1995). This semi-erotic carving features hinged arms and legs, and an oversized phallus between his legs. The figure features bead eyes, and a mouth and nose painted bright red. The phallus appears to be spring-loaded and the carving is not signed by the artist.

Henry York was a retired farmer, born in southern Kentucky in 1913. York was an Outsider artist with no formal artistic training. He is known for his hand carved and painted sculptures, typically made of found cedar wood, featuring erotic articulated male figures. Other subjects in York’s work include animals and carved canes. York’s work is held in the permanent collection of the The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago.
