A painted Folk Art carving of a semi-nude man by Kentucky artist Henry York (1913-1995). This piece depicts the man with articulated arms and legs, an oversized phallus hinged between his thighs. The figure features bead eyes, his mouth and nose painted bright red and a red cloth draped over his chest. The carving is not signed by the artist.

Henry York was a retired farmer, born in southern Kentucky in 1913. York was an Outsider artist with no formal artistic training. He is known for his hand carved and painted sculptures, typically made of found cedar wood, featuring erotic articulated male figures. Other subjects in York’s work include animals and carved canes. York’s work is held in the permanent collection of the The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago.
