Early American Oil Painting Attributed to Thomas Jefferson Wright
Item Details
An early American folk portrait attributed to Kentucky artist Thomas Jefferson Wright (1798-1845). This piece depicts an elderly woman wearing a bonnet that frames her face in lace trim. She is seated with her hands clasped and a red cloth draped over one arm, and she is rendered with a highly detailed face and more simplified, flat definition in the rest of the piece. The subject of the piece is Susannah Henderson Clark (1739-1820) of Winchester, Kentucky, the mother of Kentucky’s thirteenth governor, James Clark (1779-1839), and would have been painted within the last five years of her life. This work is not signed by the artist; but originates from the collection of the descendants of Thomas Jefferson Wright. It is presented in a gold tone wood frame with molded ivy and dead ornamentation. There is wire to the verso for hanging.
