A Buddhist mani hand prayer wheel. This hand-held mani (མ་ནི་ཆོས་འཁོར) consists of a wooden handle with a brass-tone tip leading to a central spoke, around which revolves a cylindrical mill head set with raised characters and designs, topped with an acorn-shaped finial. The mill head removes to reveal space for a prayer scroll, and a weighted governor on a chain assists the mill’s spinning action; when spun clockwise, the mani wheel magnifies the prayer’s invocations and blessings.

Condition

- some oxidation to metal; discoloration to handle; missing scroll; spoke slightly bent.
