Lorence F. Bjorklund Ink Drawing "Lead Vates in Cochise County"

An ink drawing on heavy stock paper titled Lead Vates in Cochise County by well-listed artist Lorence F. Bjorklund (American; 1911-1978). Depicted is a gunfight in a bar from the perspective of a man behind an overturned table for safety. Artist’s signature is present to the lower right margin and a stamp reading “L. F. Bjorklund, Croton Fallen N. Y” is adhered to the verso. Piece is presented as loose work without a mat or frame.

Born in Minnesota, Bjorklund was known for his Western genre scenes. Bjorklund earned his first education in art as an apprentice to a mural painter and drawing lessons from his father. In 1927, he received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute. During this time, he illustrated Western genre pulp publications. Throughout his career, his illustrations were published in over 300 books, including some that Bjorklund authored. He is listed in the 1975 book Fifty Great Western Illustrators by Jeff Dykes.
