Antique Ephemera Belonging to Cincinnati Distillery Magnate Harry S. Pattison

Item Details

A group of two pieces of antique ephemera belonging to Cincinnati distillery magnate Harry S. Pattison (American, 1870-1950). The group includes a wooden, black-painted office sign with letters in gold leaf reading ‘Private Office / Of / H.S. Pattison / E.M. Pattison’. The lot also comes with an advertisement for The Turner-Looker Co. printed by S. Rosenthal & Co. It is marked ‘A Word About Our / Leading Blends / The Turner-Looker Co., / Cincinnati.’ The advertisement is presented behind glass in a wooden frame along with a hand-signed letter by Joseph B. Rosenthal (American, 1886–1937).

The letter reads ‘Cincinnati, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1912. / Mr. Harry Pattison, / Price Hill, City. / My dear Mr Pattison: – / In going through some old samples, I ran / across the enclosed circular, this morning. / Thinking it would be of interest to you / and suitable for framing in your parlor, I am en- / closing it. / With kind regards, I remain, / Very truly yours, / Jos B Rosenthal’.

Harry S. Pattison became President of The Turner-Looker Co. in 1885 while his brother, Edward M. Pattison (American, 1876-1963) acted as Vice President. In addition to whiskey and spirits, The Turner-Looker Co. produced Golden Goose Cigars. Following the retirement of their father, the owner of the company, Harry and Edward changed its name to Pattison Brothers.

Like Pattison, Joseph B. Rosenthal came from a wealthy Cincinnati family with a variety of business interests, including the commercial printing establishment S. Rosenthal & Co. The company was founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1909, at which time Joseph served as its president.
