1923 Adie Brothers Sterling and Glass Nut Dishes with Matthews Co. Ashtrays

A collection of sterling silver and glass nut dishes and ashtrays. This includes a pair of oval nut dishes from 1923 by British maker Adie Brothers Ltd. of Birmingham, each featuring openwork sides with pierced handles, four curved feet with fleur-de-lis knees, and a removable clear glass insert. They are stamped to the undersides with the maker’s mark alongside three hallmarks for Birmingham, sterling, and 1923 and with a retailer’s mark for J.E. Caldwell & Co. of Philadelphia, PA. These are presented with a set of six stackable sterling rimmed ashtrays with glass bottoms by Matthews Co.of Newark, NJ (active 1906-c.1936), which comes with a holder that has a bail handle for carrying. Each has the maker’s mark alongside ‘Sterling’. The total approximate weight of the two nut dishes, excluding glass inserts, is 2.690 ozt.
